Menik Wijayasinghe

I started my Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin University as a young international student, full of dreams. Along the way, I met incredible people who became lifelong friends that I continue to cherish and nurture to this day.

Some of my most meaningful memories were formed as part of the Peer Support team during OWeek, where I assisted new international students with settling into life in Australia, from helping them open bank accounts and find accommodation to taking them sightseeing and introducing them to the local community. We shared laughter, learned together and built connections that extended far beyond the classroom. Our happiest moments were spent hanging out at the corner café, the library, and Building B labs, sharing stories, dreams, and endless laughter.

Years later, I returned to Deakin to complete my postgraduate studies, and this time as a proud Australian citizen. It felt like coming home. My love for Deakin is so deep that I purchased my dream home near the Burwood campus, where my journey first began. Living so close to the University, surrounded by cherished memories, truly feels like a dream come true.

Deakin has shaped not only my education but also my identity, my friendships, and my sense of belonging. It will always remain an integral part of who I am. Happy 50th Deakin!
