I completed my early units at Deakin in 1982 while living at Finke near the Simpson Desert. I remember at the time, there was a theory that I did not understand. I phoned the University and asked to speak my tutor Straun Jacobs. Straun was about to deliver a lecture but offer to phone back at 7pm that evening. I raced down to the telephone exchange (yes Finke – which had a population of 150 – had a manual telephone exchange) and got the telephonist to put the phone on at 7pm. Straun phoned at after dealing with the time differences. He was cheerful, friendly, and professional. He successfully guided me through. Conversation went on until about 8pm. I then had to run down to the exchange and get it turned off for the night. Straun put me in the right direction, my studies have been successful, and I am still enjoying being an academic. I still enjoy and critically examine Struan Jacobs’s work to this day.
