Starting Bachelor of Architecture on the windswept campus that was Deakin in 1977 was an experience.

It was so remote from anywhere that we tended to stay on site most of the day. We had hitching posts down the drive for students needing a ride into Geelong – there wasn’t much onsite accommodation in those days. But it was a fun place to hang and most architecture students did.

We had great bands in the original (and best) cafeteria. And hell, if you wanted to put a blow-up cylindrical structure outside the caf, well you just went ahead and did it. No approvals.

As for the 1978 opening. A chicken and champagne (loose description) party that still brings bad memories, a mess on the lawn outside the library and Mother Goose playing Baked Beans to all and sundry.
