Anthony David Achangadan

As a migrant from Indian origin, this was my first uni experience in Australia. I enrolled into Graduate Certificate of Adult Vocational Education and Training while working full time and parenting two young boys. It was fascinating to see how technology has enabled us to be at multiple places at the same time. I wouldn’t miss a session and usually be on the train heading back home after work or cheering my boys at soccer. I finished the whole course online and never went to campus, and before this I always believed in the old school way of attending sessions face to face. When I reflect back, it was the very experienced teachers who patiently brought us up to speed with the assessments and the exemplary network of highly motivated support staff. They want to make it happen for you. It was also my first time doing research making it challenging and exciting. I couldn’t believe the amount of time I scooped out of my schedule to complete the assessments. I also believe that I have inspired my boys in the process. The course has personally changed me. The connections I have made, the uplift in my confidence at work and in life along with endless opportunities that lay ahead of me. I must admit that it tested my endurance, resilience and commitment, but it was worth it. As I tailor my attire for graduation, I hope to be back for my Masters. Thank you, Deakin, for making it possible for me to attain a qualification against all odds and keeping my dream alive.
